The number of far-right extremist groups in the USA dropped dramatically last year for the first time in a decade, according to an annual report released Wednesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, but remains at an historically high level.The number of anti-government "patriot" movements fell 19%, from an all-time high of 1,360 in 2012 to 1,096 last year, according to the annual study.
The report said "(e)normous antipathy toward President Obama clearly drove the (initial) surge in radical groups," noting there were only 149 "patriot" groups in 2008, the year Obama was elected.
